I want to inform you of an incident that was reported to have occurred on 4/3/2008 near Todd and Dupree Halls. The victim, a minor, reported that at approximately 4:00 pm, he was approached by a white male who offered him money, cigarettes, and drugs if the minor would talk with him for 30 minutes. The minor declined and left the area.

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 40 years of age, 5'8" tall, slender build, blond hair, and possibly has a northeastern accent. He had a disheveled appearance and was wearing blue jeans, old white shoes, and a wind breaker jacket. The suspect also had a satchel type book bag. A search of the area was conducted, but no one matching the description was identified.

The Eastern Kentucky University Police Department is currently investigating this incident.

Eastern Kentucky University is committed to your safety. I urge you to take advantage of the many educational programs offered to the University community that focus on safety issues. I particularly want to remind you of the following safety precautions:

  • Immediately report suspicious persons loitering around University facilities.
  • If you become the victim of a crime, do not try to physically detain or apprehend the criminal. Report the incident immediately to the EKU Police Department at 911 or (859) 622-2821.
  • Stay alert and trust your instincts - If you feel uneasy, leave.
  • On or off campus, walk/jog/bike in groups of three or more in well-lit and well-traveled areas. After dark on campus, call the campus shuttle or for a walking escort.
  • Scan the area before you exit or approach your vehicle/building and while you proceed between sites.
  • Have your key ready in hand to quickly access the door of your vehicle/building.
  • If strangers approach, maintain a distance and be observant. If they are in a vehicle, get the license plate number, if possible.
  • Lock doors and windows of your room/building. Do not prop open doors or let strangers in.
